Niyama means observance--any kind of observance directed to help spiritual unfoldment. Patanjali cites five observances: (1) internal and external purity; (2) contentment; (3) austerity; (4) study of scriptures; and (5) worship of God or self-surrender (saucha, santosha, tapas, swadhyaya, ishwara-pranidhana).
