Snam Alloys has made its mark in the area of Ferro Silicon and has controlled aluminium and calcium content to find application in the making of cast iron, spring steel and other high silicon steels. The product's special feature is the ability to raise the bath temperature when added to molten steel in the ladle.

Snam Alloys also offers low aluminium grades of Ferro Silicon as deoxidising agents in continuous casting of steel and standard Ferro Siliicon grades.

Note : Ferro Silicon Magnesium Alloy with other specifications may also be supplied.

Snam Alloys produces high quality nodulising agents which are Ferro Silicon based alloys with magnesium and other active ingredients. They find wide applications in the production of SG Iron and speciality grey iron castings for automobile industry.

The use of these nodulising alloys provides a number of distinct advantages in the nodularisation of ductile iron. These include :

    • Higher quality castings through maximum nucleation and improved graphic nodularity.
    • Fewer as-cast carbides in thin section castings for improved machinability and reduced heat treatment costs.
    • Pricise control of rare earth levels with a single alloy addition
    • Higher levels of ferrite and lower hardness for a given composition and section size.
    • Greater tolerance to slightly higher levels of pearlite promoting residual elements.

These inoculants are made by chemical mixing by adding calcium and aluminium into molten Ferro Silicon. Because of controlled chemistry the effects of inoculation of flake graphite irons are to :

    • reduce chill and promote graphite,
    • reduce fine graphite and associated ferrite,
    • promote uniform structures,
    • obtain a small increase in strength.
In ductile irons the principal effects are to :
    • reduce chill,
    • provide general improvement in properties and
    • encourage formation of well shaped nodules.

  4. SNAM - RECAL

    Element Percentage
    Silicon 70 - 75 %
    Calcium 0.50 - 1.0 %
    Rare Earths 1.50 - 2.0 %
    Aluminium 0.50 - 1.0 %
    Iron Balance

SNAM RECAL is a Ferro Silicon based inoculant containing controlled amounts of rare earths , calcium, aluminium. The effects of the inoculant are :

    • Maximise Chill Reduction,
    • Neutralise subversive trace elements that prevent the formation of nodular graphite,
    • Improves nodularity in ductile iron,
    • Reduces fading of inoculation,
    • SNAM RECAL reduces dross formation.

SNAM RECAL can be added ot the tapping stream as the ladle is filled or when the metal is transferred from a large ladle to a casting ladle . The effects are better realised when the inoculant is added just before pouring the moulds.
Addition rates of 0.2 to 0.4% are generally sufficient for grey irons .
Addition rates of 0.4 % to 0.8 % are usually sufficient for ductile irons.
Stream Inoculation requires 0.15 to 0.30 % addition

  5. SNAM - BACAL

    Element Percentage
    Silicon 70 - 75 %
    Calcium 0.75 - 1.25 %
    Barium 0.75 - 1.25 %
    Aluminium 0.75 - 1.25 %
    Iron Balance

SNAM BACAL is a Ferro Silicon based inoculant containing controlled amounts of barium, calcium and aluminium. The effects of the inoculant are :

    • Effective control of chill in grey and ductile iron,
    • Effective even in grey iron with low sulphur content,
    • Reduces formation of dross due to moderately low levels of calcium and barium.
    • SNAM BACAL gives high nodule numbers and reduces chill in Ductile iron.
    • SNAM BACAL can be used for inoculating ductile irons treated with cerium bearing Ferro Silicon Magnesium.
    • SNAM BACAL gives less fading tendency.

SNAM BACAL can be added to the tapping stream as the ladle is filled or when the metal is transferred from a large ladle to a casting ladle . The effects are better realised when the inoculant is added just before pouring the moulds.
Addition rates of 0.2 to 0.3% or even less are usually sufficient to reduce chill in
