Ten Commandments of Egoless Programming
1. Understand and accept that you will make mistakes. The point is to find mistakes early, before they make it into production. Fortunately, except for the few of us developing rocket guidance software at [JPL|http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/], mistakes are rarely fatal in our industry. We aren't surgeons; we can learn, laugh, and move on.

[Joel|http://www.joelonsoftware.com/2001/10/29]: His article Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper is one of the best tutorials on any kind of writing: - - - - - "Pretend that your reader is lazy, stupid, and mean. He's lazy in that he doesn't want to figure out what your convoluted sentences are supposed to mean, and he doesn't want to figure out what your argument is, if it's not already obvious. He's stupid, so you have to explain everything you say to him in simple, bite-sized pieces. And he's mean, so he's not going to read your paper charitably. (For example, if something you say admits of more than one interpretation, he's going to assume you meant the less plausible thing.)" - - - - - I can think of no better advice for the kind of writing that programmers should be doing in designing and documenting their code.

According to Monty, his company gets more offers of money from venture capitalists than submissions of code fixes for the MySQL server. On the client end, the contributions have been great, but the MySQL server-end software has been written from the ground up basically by Widenius himself, who has no official title at the company."

Greg Franklin
I firmly believe great software doesn't arise from egoless or collaborative programming. It needs strong technical underpinnings (kernel-level), strong interfaces (user-level), but most of all it needs a director: A person or group of persons who have a vision for the code, give it a purpose. Technical superiority of the constituent parts isn't enough. In short, good software must have an ego built into it, a personality. The "great man" theory, in a sense.
For example, why is Napster a compelling piece of software? It looks like an el-blando Win32 app on the outside, all GDI boxes and rectangles, with boring repaint code to make sure it looks right. Its communication protocols are, as we now know, homegrown hacks at best. But its personality, instilled by [Shawn Fanning], is perfect for its purpose. Consider the pastiche.
Instant memory flood, and an instant statement of politics: As fast as you can remember 'em, you can get 'em. Only one guy had the vision (and ego) to put the classic principle of instant gratification through music into a piece of software. Software so easy to use, even college students could figure it out!
So to produce compelling software, you have got to steer a course between bureaucracy and geekocracy. Steer it towards the New World, where the people are.

[NeoIT] advises companies on how to relocate outside the US a wide range of their IT tasks, from network management to transaction processing. Last year, NeoIT’s fees were 275 million dollars. This year, it surpassed that figure in less than three months. Obviously this is not good news for IT employment. Research company Forrester estimates that 3.3 million service-sector jobs will leave the US for India, Russia, China and the Philippines over the dozen of so years. Associations representing software engineers and the like are angry but at least one industry watcher believes that companies have panicked because of the economy and that all but routine software jobs will return to the US. "Companies aren't thinking through whether long term this is going to be a viable business strategy. It's not easy communicating and coordinating with people of other cultures and other places," University of Southern California business school Professor Ravi Kumar opined to the San Francisco Chronicle.

One can become a great developer in any general purpose language, in any domain, on any platform. And, most notably for the purposes of this discussion, such a developer can carry that greatness across a change in any of them. What skills then are so universally useful and transportable in software development? Two are:

It’s interesting to think about trying to be even more ahead of the demand curve by making a big bet and training in what will be hot. This involves predicting the future. But, in life as in stocks, the winner is often not someone who knows what will happen, but someone who figured out slightly more than everyone else. And, for predicting the future, not many are trying. Along these lines, I was surprised when I learned that several prominent companies in the mobile space — in particular AdMob, acquired by Google for $750 million, and Flurry, whose software runs in over 100,000 apps — were actually founded in 2005 or 2006, before the iPhone’s announcement ushered in the modern mobile era. I think a lot of people knew the mobile revolution was coming, although perhaps not that it would be so fast. The people bold enough to actually act on that prediction were in a very good spot when it happened. I’m hoping to do something similar for program analysis.

It's unnecessary and complicated at almost every layer. At best I can congratulate someone for quickly and simply solving a problem on top of the shit that they are given. The only software that I like is one that I can easily understand and solves my problems. The amount of complexity I'm willing to tolerate is proportional to the size of the problem being solved.
The only thing that matters in software is the experience of the user.
